Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. manufactures and sells batteries in South Korea, Europe, China, North America, Southeast Asia, and internationally. The company operates through Energy Solutions and Electronic Materials segments. It offers small-sized lithium ion batteries used in laptops, tablets, mobile phones, wearable devices, power banks, power tools, garden tools, vacuum cleaners, e-bikes, e-scooters, and ignition products; automotive batteries; and energy storage systems for use in residential, utility, commercial, UPS, and base transceiver station applications. In addition, the company provides electronic materials, including semiconductor products, such as spin-on hardmasks, spin-on dielectrics, and epoxy molding compounds; LCD products, such as polarizing films and color photo resist products; and OLED products comprising evaporation materials and thin film encapsulation products. Further, it manufactures and sells rechargeable battery raw materials; and invests in new technology venture business. Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. was incorporated in 1970 and is headquartered in Yongin-Si, South Korea.

Historique

Samsung SDI was incorporated in 1970, founded by Samsung Group in Suwon, South Korea, with origins in CRT display tubes (predecessor Samsung-NEC Co.). In 1999 it transformed into the secondary battery business and began mass-producing small lithium-ion batteries, and in 2008 it established an automotive battery division. In 2014 it acquired Cheil Industries' chemical business (electronic materials and polarizing film), forming a dual-track battery-plus-electronic-materials structure, then in 2015 divested the chemical segment to Lotte Chemical. CEO Choi Joo-sun took office in December 2024. The company is headquartered in Yongin-Si, South Korea.

Samsung SDI is Korea's largest comprehensive battery company and one of the world's top five lithium battery makers, operating through Energy Solutions (about 93% of revenue) and Electronic Materials (about 7%) segments. Within the lithium battery supply chain it sits at the cell-manufacturing and battery-system stage. In Q1 2026 its global EV battery installation share fell out of the top 10, at 5.3 GWh versus CATL's 40.7%. Samsung Electronics is its largest shareholder with a 19.58% stake.
