Hitachi, Ltd. provides digital system and services, green energy and mobility, and connective industry solutions in Japan and internationally. It operates through Digital Systems & Services, Green Energy & Mobility, Connective Industries, and Others segments. The company offers system integration, consulting, cloud services, storage, servers, software, and ATMs; finance solutions, social infrastructure information systems, public IT solutions, industrial internet of things, digital engineering, control system, and cloud services; and IT products, such as data management and storage. It also provides power grids, clean, nuclear, renewable energy, and railway systems, such as rolling stock, signaling, supervision, telecommunications, and ticketing and payment solutions; automotive automation, including automotive assembly, glass applications, press automation, powertrain, paint and sealer applications, and tyre and wheel systems; and emobility solutions, as well as elevators and escalators, home appliances, air conditioners, industry and distribution solution, water and environment solutions, and industrial machinery. Historique
Hitachi, Ltd. was founded in 1910, originating from the repair shop of Kuhara Mining's Hitachi Mine, where engineer Odaira Namihei (小平浪平) led the building of Japan's first domestically made 5-horsepower induction motor; a 2kVA transformer followed in 1911. The company was formally established as Hitachi, Ltd. (株式会社日立制作所) in 1920 and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1949. After approaching the edge of bankruptcy in 2009 (per the Financial Times), it ran over a decade of asset divestitures and restructuring, reducing its listed subsidiaries from 22 to zero core-business listed subsidiaries. Key M&A followed: it acquired 80.1% of ABB Power Grids (enterprise value ~US$11B) in July 2020, forming Hitachi Energy, then the remaining 19.9% in 2022 (US$1.679B); it acquired GlobalLogic in 2021; Hitachi Rail completed its €1.66B acquisition of Thales GTS in May 2024; and in January 2026 it announced the integration of GlobalLogic and Hitachi Digital Services.
