BlackRock, Inc. was founded in 1988 and is based in New York, New York, completing its IPO on October 1, 1999. Larry Fink has served as chairman and CEO since 1999. During 2025 the firm completed the acquisitions of GIP, HPS, Preqin, and ElmTree; the HPS deal added roughly $165 billion in client AUM and about $118 billion in fee-paying AUM, while Preqin strengthened its private-markets data and GIP reinforced infrastructure. As of 2026 it employs around 25,400 people.
