Historique

Dassault Systèmes originated within French military-aircraft maker Dassault Aviation (Avions Marcel Dassault), where from 1977 a team led by engineer Francis Bernard developed 3D software to design fighter-jet surfaces, productized as CATIA. It was spun off as a separate company in 1981 and signed a distribution agreement with IBM the same year, with IBM reselling CATIA to establish its early global channel. The company completed a dual IPO in Paris and on Nasdaq on 1996-06-28, offering about 7.81 million shares priced at $23 per ADS; the offering was oversubscribed more than 35 times and consisted entirely of shares sold by existing holders. It trades as a CAC 40 constituent under the Paris code DSY and the U.S. OTC code DASTY (1 ADR = 1 ordinary share). The portfolio was built through a sustained acquisition arc: in 1997 it bought SolidWorks for about $310 million in stock to extend from high-end aerospace CAD into the mid-range desktop market, acquired Deneb (becoming DELMIA) and purchased ENOVIA from IBM, and in 1999 launched the fully Windows-based CATIA V5; in 2005 it acquired Abaqus (becoming SIMULIA), and in 2008 completed the acquisition of IBM's PLM business to bring direct sales and channel in-house. In 2012 it launched the 3DEXPERIENCE platform unifying its brand applications around the 'virtual twin', and in 2014 acquired Accelrys (becoming BIOVIA). In 2019 it acquired Medidata for about $5.8 billion ($92.25 per share, all cash) — its largest acquisition to date — adding life sciences as a third growth pillar and shifting the model toward subscription. A 5:1 stock split took effect on 2021-07-07, and on 2024-01-01 Pascal Daloz succeeded Bernard Charlès as CEO. FY2025 revenue reached €6.24 billion.

Position dans le secteur

Dassault Systèmes is a global industrial-software leader, anchoring a portfolio of brands — CATIA (high-end 3D design), SOLIDWORKS (mid-range CAD), SIMULIA (simulation), DELMIA (manufacturing and robotics), ENOVIA (PLM data collaboration), plus Medidata and BIOVIA in life sciences — on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. FY2025 revenue was €6.24 billion, with recurring revenue at 82% of software revenue and a non-IFRS operating margin of 32.0%. CATIA has been embedded for decades in the design workflows of aerospace and automotive OEMs, with cited users including Boeing (777), Dassault Falcon, the Rafale fighter, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, BMW (from 1982), Hyundai, Toyota and Volvo, making it costly to migrate a product line's design data out of CATIA/ENOVIA. The company serves more than 370,000 customers globally, and its life-sciences franchise is used across leading pharmaceutical companies. It competes across overlapping markets: in PLM/CAD against Siemens, PTC and Autodesk; in simulation (CAE) alongside the Ansys and Altair franchises; and in life-sciences software against Veeva, Oracle and IQVIA. In a large-discrete-manufacturer PLM assessment it ranked third, behind Siemens (first) and PTC (second), while retaining traditional strength in high-end CATIA and 3DEXPERIENCE among aerospace and automotive OEMs. The competitive landscape has been reshaped by consolidation: Siemens agreed to acquire Altair (simulation, HPC and AI) for about $10 billion in 2025-03, Synopsys completed its acquisition of Ansys on 2025-07-17, and Veeva — a direct Medidata rival with roughly 80% share in life-sciences CRM — is expanding via its Vault platform into Medidata's EDC core.
