The company develops, manufactures, and sells data storage devices and solutions based on hard disk drive (HDD) technology. On February 21, 2025, it completed the spin-off of Sandisk, after which it reports a single segment, HDD, organized around Cloud, Client, and Consumer end markets. It employs about 40,000 people.

Western Digital is one of only three major global HDD makers, alongside Seagate and Toshiba, in a highly concentrated industry. In FY2025 it shipped 696 exabytes, compared with Seagate's 595 exabytes. The company holds about 4,500 active patents and develops and manufactures most of the recording heads and media used in its drives, with technologies including ePMR, UltraSMR, and HAMR; its 2026 Innovation Day roadmap runs from 40TB ePMR toward 100TB+ HAMR by 2029. In FY2025 its top ten customers accounted for 68% of revenue.
