J.B. Hunt describes itself as one of the largest surface transportation and delivery services companies in North America, competing across an industry the report characterizes as mature, foundational, cyclical, and highly fragmented. Rather than relying on trucks alone, it combines an intermodal network, dedicated contract fleets, a brokerage capacity pool, final-mile delivery, and the J.B. Hunt 360 digital interface, and serves many Fortune 500 customers. Its profit is concentrated in the intermodal and dedicated contract businesses, which together contributed about 97.5% of segment operating profit in the first quarter of 2026. The company's competitive advantages stem primarily from scale, network density, customer embedding, and execution: by the end of 2025 it disclosed an ICS-affiliated third-party carrier network of about 126,400, up from 110,000 in 2024. Named comparable operators include Schneider (SNDR) by business overlap, Knight-Swift (KNX) by integrated North American road-transport scale, Old Dominion (ODFL) as a less-than-truckload reference, and Hub Group (HUBG) in intermodal and logistics solutions. The report notes a single customer accounted for more than 10% of total revenue and more than 20% of accounts receivable, indicating some customer concentration.
