연혁

Southwest Airlines Co. was incorporated in 1967 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, and conducted its IPO on January 2, 1980. It operates as a passenger airline providing scheduled domestic and near-international air transportation, earning revenue primarily from passenger fares, other operating income (the Rapid Rewards loyalty program, co-branded Chase credit card, and ancillary products), and a small amount of cargo. Revenue grew from $15.79 billion in 2021 to $23.814 billion in 2022, $26.091 billion in 2023, $27.483 billion in 2024, and $28.063 billion in 2025. As of the end of 2025 the company operated an all-Boeing 737 fleet of 803 aircraft, served 117 destinations across 42 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and ten near-international countries, and employed 73,401 people; as of January 29, 2026 it held 467 MAX firm orders and 150 options. The business model has been substantially reshaped in recent years, moving away from legacy features such as open seating and free checked baggage toward assigned seating, extra legroom, and baggage fees. After Elliott gained board influence in 2024, the company undertook a governance restructuring and business-model rewrite; in 2025 it cut roughly 15% of corporate jobs and established a Fleet Oversight Committee in July 2025. In 2025 it repurchased $2.6 billion of stock and paid $399 million in dividends, repurchasing a further $1.25 billion in the first quarter of 2026, with basic weighted shares declining from 5.98 billion in 2024 to 5.40 billion in 2025.

업계 내 위치

Southwest is a first-tier player in the U.S. domestic airline market; for the trailing twelve months to February 2026, BTS data put domestic market shares at Delta 17.8%, American 17.5%, Southwest 17.0%, and United 16.7%. It retains strong direct-sales capability, with about 78% of 2025 passenger revenue booked through Southwest.com or the Southwest App, down from 81% in 2024. Its competitive elements include a long-standing brand perception of being friendly, transparent, and low-complexity, its direct-sales channel, a large fleet and high-frequency network, and monetization through the Rapid Rewards loyalty program, the co-branded Chase card, the SWABIZ corporate travel tool, and Getaways vacation products. Its differentiation sources are limited by low switching costs, weak network effects, limited pricing power, and heavy dependence on a single Boeing 737 aircraft type and a single airframer. Its historical low-cost structure has narrowed as inflation and rising labor costs weigh on costs: fuel was about 24% of operating costs and wages, salaries and benefits about 43% in 2023, with wages, salaries and benefits rising to $12.963 billion in 2025. The industry profit pool has concentrated toward full-service network carriers, with American, Delta and United together contributing 93% of operating profit and 95% of pretax profit in the second quarter of 2025; Southwest is pursuing assigned seating, extra legroom, interline partners and loyalty monetization to compete, and in the first quarter of 2026 reported revenue of $7.249 billion, a 4.6% operating margin (up 8.1 percentage points year over year), roughly 60% of customers upgrading from the basic product, managed business revenue up 16%, and Rapid Rewards new sign-ups up 37%.
