연혁
Northern Trust Corporation was founded in 1889 and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, and held its IPO on March 26, 1990. It operates as a financial holding company providing wealth management, asset servicing, asset management, and banking solutions to corporations, institutions, families, and individuals, organized around two client-facing reporting segments: Asset Servicing and Wealth Management, with its asset management capabilities serving both. The Asset Servicing segment covers custody, fund administration, investment operations outsourcing, securities lending, foreign exchange, treasury and cash management, and brokerage for corporate and public retirement funds, foundations, endowments, fund managers, insurance companies, sovereign wealth funds, and other institutional investors, while Wealth Management serves high-net-worth individuals, families, and family offices with trust, custody, fiduciary, and private and business banking services. 업계 내 위치
Northern Trust operates in the mature custody, asset servicing, wealth management, and institutional operations outsourcing space, where demand from pension funds, mutual funds, ETFs, endowments, insurance assets, and family offices for safekeeping, valuation, reporting, clearing and settlement, and operational support is durable. In 2025 the company generated total revenue of $8.086 billion, of which $5.018 billion (about 62%) came from trust, investment, and other servicing fees and $2.411 billion came from net interest income; non-interest income of $5.675 billion accounted for about 70% of total revenue. Its principal comparable competitors are BNY and State Street, both of which are larger in scale: BNY reported 2025 revenue of $20.08 billion, while State Street ended 2025 with AUC/A of $53.8 trillion (rising to $54.5 trillion in the first quarter of 2026) and ranks as the top ETF servicer; Northern Trust's Q1 2026 AUC/A of $18.55 trillion makes it a leading global player rather than the largest. Its competitive position rests on high-end client relationships, service quality, and wealth-management linkage rather than absolute scale. The economic model depends on a very large asset base at low fee rates combined with automation, controls, and low error rates, and its competitive advantages derive from high switching costs for institutions changing custodians, deep workflow embedding across custody, accounting, performance, and risk reporting, brand trust in institutional and high-net-worth contexts, and regulatory and licensing barriers as a bank holding company subject to capital and liquidity requirements (standardized CET1 of 12.6% at year-end 2025 and 12.0% in the first quarter of 2026).
