연혁

Talen Energy Corporation, an independent power producer and infrastructure company, was incorporated in 2014 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas; it went public on January 4, 2016, and employs roughly 1,880 people. The company has shifted from a pure merchant generator toward a mixed model combining wholesale market revenue with longer-term and quasi-long-term contracted cash flows, today owning and operating approximately 13.1 GW of power infrastructure, including 2.2 GW of nuclear. In 2024 it repurchased 13,227,222 shares for about $1.977 billion at an average of roughly $149.50 per share, and by the end of 2025 had cumulatively bought back about 23% of its float for around $2 billion. During 2025 it acquired the Freedom and Guernsey assets for $3.84 billion in cash, expanded its AWS power purchase agreement from up to 960 MW to up to 1,920 MW running through 2042 (described as an approximately 17-year contract worth about $18 billion in nominal revenue), and began Reliability Must Run arrangements for Brandon Shores and H.A. Wagner from June 2025 (a combined $180 million per year in fixed payments). In 2026 it signed an agreement to acquire Cornerstone for about $3.45 billion, consisting of $2.55 billion in cash plus 2.4 million Talen shares. Mac McFarland has served as a director and CEO since 2023, and shares outstanding stood at about 45.40 million in the first quarter of 2026.

업계 내 위치

Talen Energy is an independent power producer in U.S. wholesale power markets, selling electricity, capacity, and ancillary services, with the bulk of its capacity located in PJM and the remainder at Colstrip in the WECC region. Its roughly 13.1 GW of generation includes the 2.2 GW Susquehanna nuclear plant, which produced about 17 TWh of zero-carbon power in 2025 at an all-in cost of approximately $27/MWh. In the PJM 2026/2027 capacity auction the company cleared 6,702 MW at $329.17/MW-day, corresponding to about $805 million of capacity revenue for that planning year. Talen competes against other non-utility generators, regulated utilities and their competitive subsidiaries, industrial companies, financial institutions, and energy marketers; among comparable peers its equity market capitalization of about $14.28 billion is smaller than Constellation (about $94.15 billion), Vistra (about $46.05 billion), and NRG (about $25.73 billion). The sources of its competitive position are factual rather than brand-based: hard-to-replicate nuclear licenses, interconnection rights, land, and cooling and environmental permits, together with switching costs that arise once the AWS supply enters a front-of-meter, ramped configuration.
