Branchenposition

Best Buy is a North American consumer-electronics specialty retailer operating across two reporting segments covering the United States and Canada, selling hardware, accessories, and services through an integrated network of stores, websites, apps, and in-home services. It operates in a mature, highly competitive, price-transparent industry; competitors identified include multichannel retailers, e-commerce players, technology service providers, manufacturer direct channels, and mobile carriers, with the strongest rivals being Amazon, followed by Walmart, Costco, Target, Apple's direct stores, and mobile carriers. According to Numerator's 2025 consumer-electronics tracking, Amazon's share rose to 31%, ahead of Best Buy's 27%. The company's differentiation rests on its omnichannel network: its store base, online platform, in-store pickup, in-store returns, and in-home services, supported by Geek Squad installation, repair, and after-sales support, which raise retention when customers need a product-plus-service combination. More than 80% of Marketplace returns are completed by customers in stores, making the physical network part of its platform infrastructure. Best Buy is building newer platform-style flywheels: Marketplace had more than 1,100 sellers and expanded shoppable unique products more than tenfold, while Best Buy Ads reached 750 partners. Best Buy holds limited pricing power; it discloses that some competitors have lower operating cost structures and compete primarily on price, and it operates a price-matching policy. Its direct imports account for only about 1% to 3% of its overall merchandise mix, leaving it dependent on suppliers importing from China, Mexico, and Southeast Asia.
