GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc., a semiconductor foundry, provides range of mainstream wafer fabrication services and technologies in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and internationally. It offers semiconductor devices, including microprocessors, mobile application processors, baseband processors, network processors, radio frequency modems, microcontrollers, and power management units. The company also provides quantum technology solutions. GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. has a strategic partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission to accelerate scientific discovery through artificial intelligence and advanced computing. The company was incorporated in 2008 and is headquartered in Malta, New York.

Geschichte

Incorporated in 2008, GlobalFoundries was spun out of AMD's manufacturing division when AMD went fabless; Abu Dhabi sovereign fund Mubadala's ATIC took over the assets and the company was formally established in 2009, soon merging in Singapore's Chartered Semiconductor. In August 2018 it halted development of 7nm and more advanced nodes, pivoting to specialty mature processes (RF-SOI, FD-SOI, automotive, power). It listed on Nasdaq on 2021-10-28 at an offer price of $47, raising about $2.6 billion. In April 2025 Tim Breen (former COO) became CEO, with Thomas Caulfield moving to executive chairman, and Sam Franklin became CFO in late 2025.

Branchenposition

GlobalFoundries is a pure-play semiconductor foundry, the world's third- or fourth-largest, and describes itself as the only Western pure-play foundry with manufacturing in the United States, Europe, and Singapore (Malta, New York; Vermont; Dresden, Germany; Singapore). It manufactures specialty mature-node chips for designers and system makers such as Qualcomm, AMD, and NXP, offering RF-SOI, FD-SOI (22FDX), automotive, power, and silicon photonics processes, plus products like microprocessors, baseband and network processors, RF modems, microcontrollers, and power management units. Named competitors include TSMC, UMC, SMIC, Tower (TSEM), and Samsung Foundry. With about 14,000 employees, FY2025 revenue was $6.79 billion and market cap about $46.5 billion; it holds U.S. DoD Trusted Foundry Cat 1A status, a $3.1 billion ten-year defense contract, and a $1.5 billion CHIPS grant, and is roughly 73% owned by Mubadala.
