Hexagon AB was founded in 1975 and is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1992 it was spun off as an independent company from the Swedish industrial group Eltra under Melker Schörling, and the business truly took off after Schörling personally acquired a controlling stake in Hexagon in 1998. Over the following 28 years it grew through more than 150 acquisitions—including Italy's Brown & Sharpe (2000), Intergraph/SmartPlant (2014), and Hexagon Geosystems (2018)—from a local Swedish measurement-instrument maker into a global industrial-measurement platform. On 2026-05-28 it completed the largest restructuring in its history, spinning off its software/SaaS business Octave Intelligence as a separate listed company and retaining precision measurement, geospatial, autonomous solutions, and robotics as core operations.
