It operates in three segments: Kentucky Regulated, Pennsylvania Regulated, and Rhode Island Regulated. The company engages in the transmission and distribution of electricity in eastern and central Pennsylvania; generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity in Kentucky, Virginia, and Rhode Island; distribution and sale of natural gas in Kentucky and Rhode Island; sale of wholesale electricity in Kentucky; and generation of electricity from power plants in Kentucky. It generates electricity from coal, gas, hydro, and solar sources. The company was formerly known as PP&L Resources, Inc. and changed its name to PPL Corporation in 2000. PPL Corporation was founded in 1920 and is headquartered in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

It went public on April 8, 1985, was formerly known as PP&L Resources, Inc., and adopted the name PPL Corporation in 2000. The company underwent a significant business restructuring in 2021-2022 that refocused it on U.S. regulated utilities: it completed the divestiture of its U.K. business in 2021 and, in 2022, acquired Narragansett Electric (now Rhode Island Energy) for an enterprise value of about $5.3 billion. Today PPL operates as a U.S. regulated utility serving more than 3.6 million customers across three segments—Kentucky Regulated, Pennsylvania Regulated, and Rhode Island Regulated.

PPL is a pure-play U.S. regulated utility organized into three segments. The Kentucky segment, primarily LG&E and KU, provides regulated electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and natural gas distribution to more than 1.3 million customers and holds roughly 7,500 megawatts of regulated generation; the Pennsylvania segment, PPL Electric, provides regulated electricity transmission and distribution to about 1.5 million customers; and the Rhode Island segment, Rhode Island Energy, provides regulated electricity transmission and distribution and natural gas distribution to about 0.8 million customers. Its competitive position rests not on price competition within a service territory but on franchise rights, regulatory licenses, geographic natural monopoly, asset scale, and capital barriers to entry; local transmission, distribution, and gas networks carry inherently high switching costs. As of year-end 2025 the company held $45.244 billion in total assets, $36.132 billion in net property, plant and equipment, and $42.953 billion in regulated utility gross value. Comparable U.S. regulated utilities include AEP, Duke Energy (DUK), Southern Company (SO), and WEC Energy (WEC).
