Reddit, Inc. was founded in 2005 in San Francisco, California, as a place to organize content by interest rather than by relationships. It was acquired by Condé Nast in 2006 and spun out of the Advance/Condé Nast system in 2011 to become an independent private company. Steve Huffman returned as CEO in July 2015 and CTO Christopher Slowe returned at the end of 2015, and the company began meaningful monetization efforts in 2018. Reddit built out internal search over time (Postgres full-text in 2005, PyLucene in 2007, Solr in 2008, outsourced to IndexTank in 2010, migrated to CloudSearch in 2012, and rebuilt in 2017), reaching an average of more than 35 million daily search queries on its own site by December 2023. The company priced its IPO at $34 per share on March 20, 2024, issuing 22 million Class A shares to raise roughly $748 million, and began trading on the NYSE under the ticker RDDT on March 21, 2024, including a directed share program for users and moderators; the stock closed its first day at $50.44, up 48%. On the financial side, Reddit reported a 2024 net loss of $484 million (which included $843 million of stock-based compensation and related taxes), then turned to net income of $530 million in 2025 as revenue grew 69%.
