The company was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Sydney, Australia.
Geschichte
Atlassian was founded in 2002 in Sydney, Australia, bootstrapped with credit-card debt and built around low-friction, self-serve distribution rather than heavy enterprise sales; the company was profitable from its first year. Its flagship Jira addressed concrete software-team pain points such as bug tracking, project management, and cross-role collaboration. In 2010, Accel made a $60 million minority investment to accelerate expansion in Europe and Asia and to fund acquisitions of complementary products. Atlassian went public on December 10, 2015, issuing 22 million Class A shares at $21 per share to raise roughly $462 million (a valuation of about $4.4 billion per Reuters), and closed its first trading day at $27.78. Over the following years it broadened Jira and Confluence beyond developer teams into wider business collaboration, built Jira Service Management into a second growth curve in ITSM, and expanded its Marketplace ecosystem, which generated over $1.1 billion in third-party app purchases in FY2024. The stock reached an all-time closing high of $458.13 on October 29, 2021. On September 30, 2022, Atlassian moved its parent-company domicile from the United Kingdom to the United States, switching its reporting from IFRS to GAAP. It acquired Loom in 2023 for about $885.6 million in cash, and in 2025 agreed to acquire The Browser Company (about $610 million in cash, per Reuters) and DX (about $1 billion in cash plus restricted equity). Scott Farquhar ended his co-CEO tenure in August 2024, leaving Mike Cannon-Brookes as sole CEO, and in February 2026 the company appointed former LinkedIn CFO James Chuong as CFO. In March 2026 Atlassian cut about 1,600 jobs, roughly 10% of its workforce, expecting charges of $225 million to $236 million. Total revenue grew from $3.535 billion in FY2023 to $4.359 billion in FY2024 and $5.215 billion in FY2025, with Cloud revenue reaching $3.447 billion and Data Center revenue $1.467 billion in FY2025. In September 2025 the company announced a Data Center end-of-life timeline: no sales to new customers from March 30, 2026, a final purchase and expansion date of March 30, 2028 for existing customers, and full end-of-life with read-only access on March 28, 2029.
Branchenposition
Atlassian is a subscription provider of collaboration and software-development tools centered on Jira, Confluence, and Jira Service Management, spanning three distinct profit pools: team collaboration and work management, IT service management (ITSM), and DevOps. Its product portfolio also includes Loom, Bitbucket, Trello, Compass, and the Rovo AI offering. In FY2025 Cloud accounted for about two-thirds of total revenue. The company competes with Monday.com and Asana in collaboration and work management, ServiceNow in ITSM and enterprise workflow, and GitLab in the software development lifecycle; no single customer contributed more than 5% of total revenue in FY2025. Its sources of competitive advantage include high switching costs from deep workflow embedding across Jira, Confluence, JSM, Bitbucket, and Loom; an ecosystem network effect via the Atlassian Marketplace (over $1.1 billion in third-party app purchases in FY2024); and an efficient distribution model combining low-touch, transparent pricing and word-of-mouth-driven adoption with a sales team that deepens large-enterprise accounts. In Service Collection, ARR has surpassed $1 billion with more than 65,000 customers, and the company reports winning competitive replacements from a major ITSM provider. Customers with more than $10,000 in Cloud ARR grew from 38,726 in FY2023 to 51,978 in FY2025.
