GlobalWafers Co., Ltd. was founded in 1981 and is based in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. The company researches, develops, manufactures and sells semiconductor silicon ingots and wafers, offering a full product line from 3-inch to 12-inch, including polished, epitaxial (Epi), diffusion, annealed, SOI and FZ wafers, as well as SiC and GaN compound semiconductor products. After its 2020 attempt to acquire Germany's Siltronic was unsuccessful, the company turned toward building out its own global capacity; it recognized a EUR 50 million termination fee in 2021. Its parent, Sino-American Silicon, held 46.64% of the shares as of March 26, 2026, with Xu Xiulan serving as chairwoman.

GlobalWafers is the world's third-largest semiconductor silicon wafer supplier, with shipments accounting for roughly 15%-20% of the global market according to company filings. The industry is highly concentrated, with the top five suppliers controlling over 90% of the market: Shin-Etsu, SUMCO, GlobalWafers, Siltronic and SK Siltron. The company operates a localized supply network of eighteen plants spanning nine countries across three continents. Per SEMI, 2025 global silicon wafer shipment area rose 5.8% year over year to 12,973 MSI while industry revenue fell 1.2% to US$11.4 billion, and Q1 2026 shipments rose 13% year over year.
