Capital One Financial Corporation was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in McLean, Virginia, with its IPO on November 15, 1994. Richard Fairbank, the company's founder, has served as a director since 1994 and is chairman and CEO. In 2025 the company integrated Discover through an all-stock merger, which lifted its period-end common shares outstanding from about 381.2 million at the end of 2024 to about 625.1 million at the end of 2025. In January 2026 it announced an agreement to acquire Brex for USD 5.15 billion.
