History

Gen Digital Inc. was founded in 1982 and is headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, with an IPO date of March 26, 1990. The company was formerly known as NortonLifeLock Inc. and changed its name to Gen Digital Inc. in November 2022. It has grown into a multi-brand consumer digital-safety platform whose products are offered under the Norton, Avast, LifeLock, MoneyLion, Avira, AVG, ReputationDefender, and CCleaner brands. A major step in its evolution was the integration of Avast, after which revenue, margins, and leverage improved; the company subsequently acquired MoneyLion for a net consideration of about $0.951 billion, adding roughly $0.560 billion of goodwill and $0.347 billion of identifiable intangible assets and contributing about $0.823 billion of revenue in FY2026 (about 16% of total revenue). Revenue rose from $2.796 billion in FY2022 to $5.0 billion in FY2026, by which point the business was reported in two segments, Cyber Safety Platform ($3.339 billion) and Trust-Based Solutions ($1.661 billion). Over the same period total customers grew to 79 million by FY2026 Q4 from 68 million a year earlier, while net leverage was reduced to about 3x EBITDA. The company employs about 3,900 people.

Industry position

Gen Digital operates as a consumer digital-safety and trust-based subscription platform serving individuals, families, and small businesses, rather than enterprise IT departments. It is one of the larger independent consumer digital-safety platforms, with 79 million customers across multiple established brands (Norton, Avast, AVG, Avira, LifeLock) that have repeatedly earned recognition from third-party testing organizations such as AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives, with Norton maintaining Top Product status across multiple Windows 11 test cycles. The company competes with platform and ecosystem providers including Apple, Google, and Microsoft, as well as specialist players such as Bitdefender, ESET, McAfee, Trend Micro, Kaspersky, Aura, Nord Security, Credit Karma, and SoFi; in its 10-K the company states that its market typically has no substantial barriers to entry and that operating-system and platform providers increasingly build security, privacy, and financial features in, often for free. Its differentiation rests on brand recognition, service bundling, retention, and cross-selling: Norton cross-sell penetration exceeds 26%, and the restructured LifeLock product retains about 90% of an approximately 3 million customer base. Some of its key engineering and threat-response services still depend on Broadcom. Publicly available third-party market-share data for independent consumer security software is limited. As reference comparables, Check Point had a market capitalization of about $15.25 billion, Palo Alto Networks about $200.28 billion, and CrowdStrike about $183.72 billion.
