History

Globe Life Inc. was founded in 1900 and is headquartered in McKinney, Texas. The company was formerly known as Torchmark Corporation and changed its name to Globe Life Inc. in August 2019; its shares date to an IPO on December 30, 1987. Operating as an insurance holding company, it provides life and supplemental health insurance to lower middle- and middle-income families in the United States, and organizes itself into three reporting segments: Life Insurance, Supplemental Health Insurance, and Investments. Distribution is built around three exclusive agency channels (American Income, Liberty National, and Family Heritage), an independent agency channel (United American), and a direct-to-consumer channel. By the end of 2025 the company had more than 17 million policies in force, and as of the first quarter of 2026 its annualized premium in force reached $5.158 billion, split between $3.442 billion of life and $1.716 billion of health.

Industry position

Globe Life operates in the mature U.S. individual and supplemental insurance market, focusing on basic protection products for working and lower-to-middle-income households. In a 2025 disclosure citing S&P Global Market Intelligence 2024 data, the company stated that its subsidiaries collectively hold the most policies in force in the United States; the company frames this as its own statement rather than fully independently verified. Its differentiation rests less on scale than on a focus on individual basic protection, deeply built proprietary distribution, large share buybacks, and relatively high ROE. The most comparable public peers vary by lens: Primerica is the closest match for the lower-to-middle-income life plus direct/agency-network model, while Aflac, Unum, and CNO are more commonly used valuation peers for supplemental health and policy-pool profitability. Its competitive advantages stem mainly from its exclusive agency and direct channels, more than 60 years of accumulated data and underwriting experience in this customer segment, insurance licensing and statutory capital requirements, and disciplined capital allocation; within its health book, Medicare Supplement (where United American competes in Medigap) accounts for 46% of premium in force.
