Historia

Quest Diagnostics Incorporated was founded in 1967 and is headquartered in Secaucus, New Jersey. The company went public on December 17, 1996. It operates a nationwide diagnostic information services network, offering routine, non-routine, and advanced clinical testing, anatomic pathology, and related services under the Quest Diagnostics brand as well as the AmeriPath, Dermpath Diagnostics, ExamOne, and Quanum brands. The company has expanded substantially through acquisitions, completing a series of deals in 2024 including LifeLabs, Allina, OhioHealth, University Hospitals, and three New York physician group laboratories. As of 2025 it processed roughly 244 million test requisitions across about 8,000 patient access points, including approximately 2,400 patient service centers, and employs around 57,000 people.

Posición en el sector

Quest Diagnostics is one of the two dominant players in the U.S. independent clinical laboratory market, together with Labcorp forming a duopoly. According to its 2025 Investor Day, the U.S. laboratory market is about $89 billion, split between a physician channel of roughly $58 billion and a hospital channel of roughly $31 billion. Diagnostic Information Services accounted for more than 95% of the company's revenue through the first quarter of 2026. Its competitive advantages stem from scale rather than a single brand or patent: a nationwide laboratory network, logistics density, broad patient access reaching more than 90% of U.S. insured lives, deep IT and interface integration with clinical workflows, and the operating data accumulated from processing about 244 million requisitions, which the company describes as one of the largest de-identified clinical laboratory databases globally. These factors create switching costs through ordering interfaces, EHR connectivity, phlebotomy coverage, and existing contracts. The company itself characterizes the industry as fragmented and highly competitive in its 10-K, with its principal competitor Labcorp generating $13.95 billion in 2025 revenue, of which Diagnostics Laboratories represented about 78%; the broader field also includes numerous regional independent laboratories, hospital outreach laboratories, and physician office labs.
