Historia

Eurofins Scientific SE was founded in 1987 by Gilles Martin in Nantes, France, with its corporate headquarters relocated to Luxembourg registration in 2017. Its commercial foundation was the SNIF-NMR (Site-Specific Natural Isotope Fractionation - Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) technology developed in the 1980s by Martin's mother, Hélène Maucourt-Martin, a chemistry professor at the University of Nantes, initially used to authenticate the origin of wine and detect adulteration. Gilles Martin (born 1962, educated at Polytechnique with a Harvard MBA) co-founded the company with his father Yves-Alain Martin, a physics professor at the University of Nantes, to commercialize the patent. The company held its IPO in Paris in 1997 at a market capitalization of EUR 35 million (listing price EUR 11). Between 2000 and 2024 it completed more than 600 acquisitions (averaging roughly 25 per year at EUR 5-30 million each), expanding from single-focus wine testing into a global integrated testing and certification group. From 2020 to 2024 it built its clinical diagnostics segment from zero to about 22% of revenue through acquisitions including Synlab Iberia operations and Boehringer's clinical business. By FY2025, after 38 years of acquisition-driven integration, Eurofins operated 900+ laboratories across 50+ countries with about 64,000 employees, 47,000+ clients, and reported revenue of EUR 7,296 million (+5.0% reported, +4.1% organic).

Posición en el sector

Eurofins Scientific is the largest player in the global Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) industry, a market sized at roughly USD 250 billion growing about 5-7% annually. Its operations span five segments: food and feed (about 30% of revenue), biopharma and pharmaceutical testing (about 26%), environment (about 12%), clinical diagnostics (about 22%), and consumer products and other (about 10%), supported by 900+ laboratories in 50+ countries, a library of 200,000+ analytical methods, and a client base covering 90% of the world's large pharmaceutical companies and 70% of large food groups. Its moat is built on global network scale, licensing and regulatory barriers (such as ISO 17025 for food testing and FDA GMP for pharmaceutical testing), and IT platform scale effects that make it the player able to provide multinational clients with one-stop global compliance testing, differentiating it from comprehensive TIC peers SGS, Bureau Veritas and Intertek. Eurofins reported an adjusted EBITDA margin of 22.5% in FY2025, the highest among these competitors (SGS 17%, Bureau Veritas 17%, Intertek 19%). Control rests with the Martin family, which holds 32.9% economic interest and 65.8% voting rights through Analytical Bioventures S.C.A., a Luxembourg-registered holding company operating a dual-voting structure.
