Sony was incorporated in 1946 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Formerly named Sony Corporation, it changed its name to Sony Group Corporation in April 2021. In October 2025 it partially spun off and separately listed its financial-services business (Sony Financial Group), retaining about 16.4%. Notable acquisitions include EMI music publishing (about USD 2.3 billion), Crunchyroll (USD 1.175 billion), and Bungie (about USD 3.6 billion in 2022); in 2024 it acquired the Queen catalog (about USD 1 to 1.2 billion) and a half-stake in the Michael Jackson catalog (about USD 1.2 billion valuation).
