Lonza Group AG, together with its subsidiaries, operates as a contract development and manufacturing organization for pharma and biotech companies in Europe, North and Central America, Latin America, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and internationally. It operates through Integrated Biologics; Advanced Synthesis; and Specialized Modalities segments. The Integrated Biologics segment offers CDMO biologics services from clinical development, drug substance, and drug product manufacturing; and operates mammalian and drug product platforms. Its Advanced Synthesis segment manufactures antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and other bioconjugates, small molecules, and highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients; and operates small molecules and bioconjugates platforms. The Specialized Modalities segment operates various technologies, such as spanning cell & gene, microbial, bioscience, and mRNA. Lonza Group AG was incorporated in 1897 and is headquartered in Basel, Switzerland.
Historique
Lonza was founded in 1897 in the town of Lonza, canton of Bern, Switzerland, originally in electrochemistry (calcium carbide). In 1999 it was spun off and independently listed as part of the Alusuisse-Lonza Group restructuring, and built its CDMO foundation through its Bioscience business in 2007. In 2017 it acquired Capsugel for USD 5.5 B, forming the core of its Capsules & Health Ingredients business. In April 2024 it divested its Specialty Ingredients business to Bain Capital for USD 2.6 B and Wolfgang Wienand became CEO, and in November 2024 it completed the USD 1.2 B acquisition of Roche's Vacaville plant in California.

The Vacaville site is the world's largest single biopharmaceutical facility (330,000 L), placing Lonza in a duopoly with Samsung Biologics in large-scale (200,000 L+) mammalian capacity; other named players include Boehringer Ingelheim, Fujifilm Diosynth, and WuXi Biologics, and its Visp plant in Switzerland is one of the largest single ADC CDMO sites globally.
