United Microelectronics Corporation was incorporated in 1980 and is headquartered in Hsinchu City, Taiwan.
沿革
United Microelectronics Corporation was incorporated in 1980 and is headquartered in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, where company and industry sources define it as Taiwan's first semiconductor company; ITRI's public materials note it became Taiwan's first listed semiconductor company in 1985, and it later listed via an IPO dated September 19, 2000. Over time it diverged from TSMC by concentrating on mature and specialty processes such as 22/28nm rather than leading-edge nodes. Its 2018-2021 record also included a governance episode: in 2020 the U.S. Department of Justice announced UMC reached a guilty plea on a trade-secret matter and paid a US$60 million fine, and in 2021 it reached a global settlement with Micron, with both sides withdrawing litigation and UMC making a one-time payment.
業界での地位
United Microelectronics Corporation operates as a global pure-play semiconductor wafer foundry, described as one of Taiwan's two foundry leaders, manufacturing and selling integrated circuits with a focus on 22/28nm mature and specialty processes; its current mass-production revenue carries zero contribution from nodes below 14nm. It serves customers from manufacturing sites across Taiwan, Singapore, Japan and China, plus a U.S. 12nm platform developed in collaboration with Intel. Per Gartner data cited in UMC's annual report, the global foundry market reached about US$173.7 billion in revenue in 2025; its principal benchmarks are TSMC, GlobalFoundries and SMIC, with TSMC the leader against which UMC trades at a discount.
