沿革

American International Group, Inc. (AIG) was founded in 1919 and is headquartered in New York. The company has transformed from a sprawling diversified financial group into a focused global property and casualty insurer, divesting non-core operations and deconsolidating its Life and Retirement business (Corebridge). It now reports through three segments: North America Commercial, International Commercial, and Global Personal, with an Other Operations category covering parent liquidity portfolio investment income, Corebridge dividend income, corporate expenses, and interest expense. Underwriting discipline improved markedly over recent years: the General Insurance accident-year adjusted combined ratio fell from about 97.0% in 2020 to 92.1% in 2021, 89.1% in 2022, and 88.3% in 2025, while the full-year combined ratio improved from 112.6% in 2020 to 90.1% in 2025, and General Insurance swung from a 2020 underwriting loss to an underwriting profit of about 2.332 billion USD in 2025. The company also rebuilt its balance sheet, lowering its debt-to-capital ratio to about 18% and repurchasing large amounts of stock; 2025 shareholder equity was about 41.139 billion USD and Q1 2026 total invested assets were about 90.8 billion USD. Recent investments include a 35% stake in Convex (about 2.1 billion USD), a 9.9% stake in Onex (about 646 million USD), and a commercial renewal-rights deal with Everest.

業界での地位

AIG is a global property and casualty insurer whose core business combines underwriting and investment of float, with revenue from insurance premiums and investment income. Its commercial lines span property, liability, financial lines, and global specialty, while personal lines include global accident and health, personal property, auto, and high-net-worth coverage. The company describes its customer base as millions of clients across more than 200 countries and jurisdictions, ranging from individuals and small businesses to Fortune 500 multinationals, served through long-standing relationships with brokers, agents, advisors, platforms, and other distributors. Property and casualty insurance, especially commercial lines, is a mature industry driven by ongoing demand for risk transfer; Swiss Re projected global non-life premiums to grow about 1.7% in real terms in 2026 and about 2.5% in 2027. AIG's most direct public-market comparables are Chubb, Travelers, and Hartford. Its competitive position rests on scale, licenses, ratings, and a global network; distribution and service capability; and capital discipline: as of February 2026 its principal insurance subsidiaries carried financial-strength ratings of A.M. Best A, S&P AA-, Fitch AA-, and Moody's A1, with multiple upgrades in 2025. On profitability metrics AIG still trails the strongest peers, with 2025 ROE of 7.5% and core operating ROE of 11.1% (annualized core operating ROE of 12.2% in Q1 2026), versus Chubb core operating ROE of about 14.0%, Travelers ROE of about 21% in 2025, and Hartford trailing-twelve-month ROE of about 23%.
