沿革

Akamai Technologies, Inc. was incorporated in 1998 and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts; it completed its IPO on October 29, 1999. The company was founded by F. Thomson Leighton, who serves as CEO. Originally a content delivery network (CDN) provider, Akamai has evolved into a composite built on three solution lines: Delivery, Security, and Cloud Computing. By the end of 2025 its infrastructure spanned 4,300+ edge PoPs across 130+ countries and roughly 700 cities, interconnected with about 1,200 network partners, and it employed 11,419 people. Akamai expanded through acquisitions: it bought Linode in 2022 to launch its cloud business, acquired Noname Security in 2024 to strengthen API security and integrated Edgio-related assets that same year, and in May 2026 announced a planned acquisition of LayerX for about $205 million to add browser-side AI usage control and workforce security. In May 2026 the company also completed a total of $3.5 billion in 0% convertible debt ($1.75 billion plus $1.75 billion), with remaining net proceeds earmarked for accelerated Cloud Infrastructure Services capital expenditure. 2025 revenue reached $4.208 billion, and in Q1 2026 quarterly revenue was split into Security at $590 million, Delivery and other cloud applications at $389 million, and Cloud Infrastructure Services at $95 million.

業界での地位

Akamai operates across three solution categories — Security, Delivery, and Cloud Computing — rather than a single industry. It reported 2025 revenue of $4.208 billion and Q1 2026 revenue of $1.074 billion, up 6% year over year, with Security growing 11% and Cloud Infrastructure Services growing 40%. In mature CDN/edge delivery it remains a large-scale legacy player; in edge and enterprise security it competes with Cloudflare, Fastly, Zscaler, Palo Alto, and Netskope across different sub-segments; and in cloud infrastructure it is far smaller than AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, positioning itself in distributed, low-latency, and cost-predictable use cases. Among peers, Cloudflare reported 2025 revenue of $2.168 billion (up 29.8% for the year, 34% in Q1 2026) and Fastly reported 2025 revenue of $624 million (up 15% for the year, 20% in Q1 2026). Its customers include large enterprises and global brands such as adidas, Adobe, Airbnb, Comcast, eBay, Fidelity, Honda, Japan Airlines, Marriott, Spotify, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Telefonica, Toshiba, Ubisoft, and The Washington Post; no single customer contributed more than 10% of total revenue in 2023, 2024, or 2025, and remaining performance obligations were about $5.5 billion at the end of Q1 2026. Its competitive advantages draw on the scale of its globally distributed infrastructure, switching costs once its security, performance, and traffic-routing capabilities are embedded in customer architectures, and a data flywheel from its large volume of network and security traffic and threat intelligence.
