The firm operates a single business segment, investment management and related services, and remains under significant control by the Johnson family: as of early December 2025, Jennifer M. Johnson held about 1.6%, Gregory E. Johnson about 1.4%, and Rupert H. Johnson, Jr. about 20.0%, with directors and officers together holding roughly 23.4%. Over time the company expanded from a traditional mutual-fund manager into a multi-brand, multi-asset platform through a series of acquisitions, including Legg Mason, Lexington and Putnam (which contributed a full quarter in fiscal 2024), and Apera (whose acquisition closed on October 1, 2025); its sub-brands include Franklin, Templeton, Putnam, Western Asset, Clarion and Lexington, with coverage across more than 150 countries and about 10,000 employees. Assets under management at fiscal year-end were $1.53 trillion in 2021, $1.30 trillion in 2022, $1.37 trillion in 2023, $1.68 trillion in 2024 and $1.66 trillion in 2025, reaching about $1.682 trillion as of March 31, 2026.
