沿革
Hormel Foods Corporation was founded in 1891 and is headquartered in Austin, Minnesota. Formerly known as Geo. A. Hormel & Company, it adopted the name Hormel Foods Corporation in January 1995, and its shares were listed in January 1990. The company has grown into a packaged-foods maker that develops, processes, and distributes meat, nuts, and other food products, organized into three segments: Retail, Foodservice, and International, with roughly 20,000 employees and revenue of about $12.1 billion in fiscal 2025. Its portfolio spans well-known brands including SPAM, Planters, Skippy, Jennie-O, Applegate, Black Label, Dinty Moore, and Wholly. In 2021 Hormel acquired the Planters snack-nut business for $3.35 billion; more recently it has reshaped the portfolio toward higher-value protein, making Justin's an independent company in 2025 while retaining a 49% stake, and divesting its whole-bird turkey business in 2026 while keeping the JENNIE-O brand and higher-value turkey products.
業界での地位
Hormel competes in the mature and highly competitive packaged-foods industry, a Consumer Defensive sector with stable long-term demand but intense rivalry. The company states it competes on price, product quality and attributes, brand recognition, product-line breadth, and customer service, against not only pork and turkey processors but also suppliers of beef, chicken, fish, nuts, and plant-based proteins. Its core market remains the United States: in fiscal 2025 Retail generated about $7.46 billion of revenue, Foodservice about $3.94 billion, and International about $709 million, with international operations serving as a supplement rather than the main engine. The company's competitive position rests on its brands and its distribution reach across all fifty U.S. states, served through a direct sales organization as well as brokers and distributors, with many of its key trademarks renewable indefinitely while in use. Customer concentration is a notable feature: Walmart accounted for 15.6% of net sales in fiscal 2025 and the top five customers for roughly 38%.
