沿革

KeyCorp was founded in 1849 and is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. It operates as the holding company for KeyBank National Association, providing retail and commercial banking products and services across the United States, and went public on November 5, 1987. The company is organized into two segments, the Consumer Bank and the Commercial Bank, spanning personal banking, middle-market and commercial banking, capital markets, wealth management, payments, and mortgage services. Leadership transitioned through an internally developed succession plan: Chris Gorman was designated COO and successor in 2019 and became CEO in 2020. A notable recent milestone was the 2024 strategic investment by Scotiabank of approximately 2.8 billion dollars, issued at a fixed price of 17.17 dollars per share, which raised KeyCorp's CET1 ratio by about 195 basis points. By year-end 2025 the company operated roughly 940 branches and about 1,120 ATMs across 15 states with total assets of approximately 184.38 billion dollars, and by the first quarter of 2026 total assets reached approximately 188.66 billion dollars with assets under management of about 70 billion dollars and around 17,469 employees.

業界での地位

KeyCorp is a U.S. regional bank holding company operating mainly through KeyBank, with a loan and deposit base weighted toward the commercial side. As of the first quarter of 2026 it maintained a CET1 ratio of 11.4% and ROTCE of 13.0%, with assets under management of about 70 billion dollars, up 11% year over year. Its principal competitors, as disclosed by the company, are mid-to-large U.S. regional banks and national banks including Citizens, Fifth Third, Huntington, M&T, PNC, Regions, Truist, U.S. Bancorp, and Zions, rather than community banks. KeyCorp's differentiation rests on the density of its commercial relationships and its capital markets and commercial real estate servicing capabilities: roughly 91% of commercial loans are extended to clients that have additional business with Key, and about 96% of commercial deposits come from clients holding operating accounts, reflecting bundled lending, deposit, treasury, and capital-markets relationships rather than one-off transactions. Barriers to entry in its industry derive from banking charters, capital requirements, and risk and compliance frameworks.
