MongoDB, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, provides general purpose database platform worldwide. The company offers MongoDB Atlas, a hosted multi-cloud database-as-a-service solution; MongoDB Enterprise Advanced, a commercial database server for enterprise customers to run in the cloud, on-premises, or in a hybrid environment; and Community Server, a free-to-download version of its database, which includes the functionality that developers need to get started with MongoDB. It offers professional services comprising consulting and training. The company was formerly known as 10gen, Inc. and changed its name to MongoDB, Inc. in August 2013. MongoDB, Inc. was incorporated in 2007 and is headquartered in New York, New York.

沿革

MongoDB, Inc. was incorporated in 2007 as 10gen, Inc. by Dwight Merriman, Eliot Horowitz and Kevin Ryan, all of whom came from DoubleClick, where they encountered the scaling and flexibility limits of relational databases under large-scale ad serving that processed more than 400,000 ad requests per second. The database began as one component of 10gen's broader platform vision; it proved more durable than the platform, so 10gen released MongoDB as a standalone open-source project in 2009 and renamed the company to MongoDB, Inc. in August 2013. The company is headquartered in New York, New York, and had 5,636 employees. MongoDB went public on Nasdaq under the ticker MDB on 2017-10-19 with a dual-class share structure, selling 8 million Class A shares at $24 and raising about $192 million; TechCrunch reported a first-day closing market capitalization near $1.6 billion. Early backers included Union Square Ventures, Sequoia and Flybridge. The pivotal product was MongoDB Atlas, a multi-cloud database-as-a-service launched in June 2016; Atlas grew from 46% of revenue in FY2021 to 56% (FY2022), 63% (FY2023), 66% (FY2024), 70% (FY2025) and 75% (FY2026) as the company shifted its revenue center from self-managed licenses toward managed cloud, and total revenue rose from $590.4 million in FY2021 to $2,463.8 million in FY2026. In October 2018 MongoDB adopted the Server Side Public License (SSPL) for versions released after 2018-10-16. In February 2025 it acquired Voyage AI to combine embedding and reranking models with operational data, followed in January 2026 by a unified data intelligence layer (five embedding models, automatic embedding, an Atlas built-in API and a data operations assistant) and in May 2026 by persistent agent memory and an automatic-embedding public beta. In November 2025 the board appointed Chirantan "CJ" Desai, previously at Cloudflare and earlier a ServiceNow executive, as President and CEO, succeeding Dev Ittycheria after eleven years. MongoDB redeemed its 2026 convertible notes to reach a no-debt balance sheet and launched a $200 million share buyback in 2025 to offset dilution from the Voyage AI acquisition.

業界での地位

MongoDB operates across three overlapping markets: traditional DBMS, cloud databases/DBaaS, and the AI retrieval and application-data layer. Gartner's late-2025 forecast projected the global DBMS market to grow 18.4% to $161 billion in 2026, with vector databases the fastest-growing subsegment at a 75.3% CAGR. The product line has three tiers: a free Community Server for developer adoption, the self-managed Enterprise Advanced (run in public cloud, private cloud, on-premises or hybrid environments), and Atlas, the managed multi-cloud platform that is the revenue center; in FY2025 Atlas, Enterprise Advanced and professional services were 70%, 23% and 3% of revenue, with Atlas rising to 75% in FY2026. The company describes itself as the most widely available, globally distributed database. Its differentiation rests on developer mindshare and a document model designed to keep application objects close to database objects, reducing object-relational mapping and frequent schema-migration friction; on integration depth that bundles the database, full-text search, vector search, automatic embedding, reranking, agent memory and real-time operational data into one layer; on switching costs from data migration, index rebuilds, application code rewrites and operational changeovers; and on multi-cloud, cloud-neutral distribution. Total customers grew from 57,100 in April 2025 to 67,700 in April 2026, and customers with more than $100,000 in annual recurring revenue reached 2,895 in Q1 FY2027. Competition comes from the Postgres ecosystem (PostgreSQL, pgvector, Supabase, Neon and Databricks Lakebase, which together form an increasingly complete alternative for new projects and AI-application backends), hyperscaler databases (Amazon DynamoDB, Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB and Amazon DocumentDB, which is MongoDB API-compatible), specialized retrieval and search players (Pinecone and Elastic), and capital-market comparables such as Snowflake and Datadog. To address regulated and government workloads, MongoDB pursued FedRAMP High and DoD Impact Level 5 authorizations (noted in its FY2026 Q2 disclosure).
