沿革

NRG Energy, Inc. was founded in 1989 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas, and it went public on May 25, 2000. The company evolved from a power generator into an integrated energy platform that packages competitive retail electricity and gas, owned generation assets, hedging capability and the Vivint smart-home subscription business, operating through its Texas, East, West/Other, Vivint Smart Home and Corporate Activities segments under the NRG, Reliant, Direct Energy, Green Mountain Energy and Vivint brands. In January 2026 NRG completed the LS Power asset acquisition, which added about 13GW and doubled its generation capacity to roughly 25GW. Over recent years its share count fell substantially, with basic weighted-average shares declining from 245M in 2021 to 195M in 2025 and year-end common shares outstanding dropping from 316.74M in 2017 to 190.38M in 2025. In April 2026 the company completed a leadership transition, with the CEO role passing from Larry Coben to Robert Gaudette alongside a handover of the chairman position.

業界での地位

NRG is not a traditional regulated utility but a competitive energy retailer combined with owned, dispatchable generation and a smart-home subscription business, serving about 8 million North American customers across residential, commercial, government, industrial, data center and wholesale segments. Behind its core power and gas business sits roughly 25GW of competitive generation as of the first quarter of 2026, of which about 13GW came from the January 2026 LS Power acquisition. In 2025 it sold approximately 154 TWh of electricity and 1,857 MMDth of natural gas, giving it large scale in the U.S. competitive retail energy market, and its retail brands hold the largest market share among Texas competitive residential electricity customers. As of end-2024 it had recurring electricity and gas business across 25 states, Washington D.C. and 8 Canadian provinces, while Vivint covers all 50 U.S. states and D.C., with an average customer lifecycle of about 9 years and a platform managing more than 33 million home devices. Its differentiation comes from facts such as owned generation plus multi-region supply and hedging that give greater supply flexibility than pure retailers, and Vivint's higher switching costs driven by hardware, monitoring and installation; its closest public comparables are Vistra, Constellation and AES.
