Roche Holding AG engages in the pharmaceuticals and diagnostics businesses in Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The company offers pharma solutions in the therapeutic areas of anaemia, blood and solid tumors, dermatology, haematology, infectious diseases, inflammatory and autoimmune, neurological disorders, ophthalmology, respiratory disorders, and transplantation. It also provides in vitro tests for the diagnosis of various diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, Covid-19, hepatitis, human papillomavirus, and others; diagnostic instruments; and digital health solutions. The company was founded in 1896 and is based in Basel, Switzerland.

沿革

Roche was founded in October 1896 by Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche in Basel (its predecessor was the 1894 firm Hoffmann, Traub & Co.), with the "La Roche" name taken from his wife Adèle La Roche. It first rose on vitamins, once the world's largest vitamin producer, then moved into prescription drugs after World War II and earned its first major profits in psychiatric medicines such as Valium. From 1990 Roche steadily raised its stake in Genentech, and in 2009 it bought out all remaining Genentech public shares at $95 per share, roughly $46.8 billion in total, having previously held about 56%. In 2023 Thomas Schinecker became CEO and former CEO Severin Schwan became chairman.

業界での地位

Roche is a Swiss pharmaceuticals-and-diagnostics group and the undisputed global number one in in-vitro diagnostics (IVD), with 2023 diagnostics revenue of about $16.8 billion, alongside a top-tier prescription-drug business in oncology, neurology, hematology and ophthalmology. In fiscal 2025 group sales were CHF 61.516 billion, split roughly 77.5% pharmaceuticals and 22.5% diagnostics, at a core operating margin of about 35.5%. It has raised its dividend for about 39 consecutive years, a rare dividend aristocrat in Europe, and it controls Tokyo-listed Chugai (4519.TSE) at about 59.89%. Its peers include Novartis, AstraZeneca, Merck, Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk in pharmaceuticals and Abbott, Danaher and Thermo Fisher in diagnostics.
