Symbotic Inc., an automation technology company, develops technologies to enhance operating efficiencies in modern warehouses. The company automates the processing of pallets, cases, and individual items in warehouses. Its systems enhance operations at the front end of the supply chain. The company is headquartered in Wilmington, Massachusetts.

沿革

Symbotic was founded in 2007 as CasePick Systems, funded by Rick Cohen and proposed by inventor John Lert, growing directly out of the Cohen family business C&S Wholesale Grocers' inability to find an off-the-shelf warehouse-automation solution; it was later renamed Symbotic. In December 2021 it announced a merger with SoftBank-sponsored SPAC SVF Investment Corp 3 (pro forma enterprise value about $4.8 billion, equity value about $5.5 billion, $10.00 issue price, including a $150 million PIPE from Walmart); the deal closed on 2022-06-07 and the stock began trading as SYM on Nasdaq on 2022-06-08. In July 2023 it formed the warehouse-as-a-service joint venture GreenBox (later operated as Exol) with SoftBank holding 65% and Symbotic 35%. In November 2024 the company restated results: its audit committee determined that the FY2024 Q1-Q3 interim reports should no longer be relied upon, a second error involving non-billable cost overruns was disclosed, a late-filing notice was submitted on 2024-11-27, and final restated FY2024 revenue was $1,788.2 million. On 2025-01-28 it completed the acquisition of Walmart's Advanced Systems & Robotics business for $200 million cash plus up to $350 million, with Walmart funding $520 million of development. Revenue grew from $251.9 million in FY2021 to $593.3 million (FY2022), $1,176.9 million (FY2023), $1,788.2 million (FY2024, restated) and $2,246.9 million in FY2025. The company is headquartered in Wilmington, Massachusetts and employs about 2,000 people.

業界での地位

Symbotic is a U.S.-listed pure-play provider of end-to-end whole-warehouse automation systems, combining a fleet of SymBot autonomous mobile robots, AI orchestration software, high-density storage structures, robotic arms and lifts, and vision/sensing for case-handling storage and picking in large distribution centers; it holds about 1,100 issued and pending patents. Its revenue splits into three segments in FY2025: Systems deployments (94.3% of revenue, 19.3% gross margin), recurring Software maintenance (1.3%, 71.1% gross margin, with contract terms mostly 15 years), and Operation services (4.4%). Customer concentration is a defining feature: Walmart accounted for 84.6% of FY2025 revenue (86.9% in FY2024, 88.4% in FY2023), with other named customers UNFI, GreenBox, Southern Glazer's and Albertsons together about 13%; Walmart is also a roughly 9% shareholder. Relative to traditional AS/RS systems from Dematic and Honeywell Intelligrated that rely on fixed cranes and shuttles, Symbotic's approach offers higher density, throughput and redundancy, and relative to assistive goods-to-person AMR vendors such as Locus it integrates the full distribution-center workflow; it is positioned for large-case and store-replenishment use cases versus AutoStore and Ocado, which are strong in single-item handling. Differentiation rests on high switching costs from multi-year embedded installations and long-term software-maintenance contracts. The broader warehouse-automation field's top players (Amazon Robotics, Daifuku, KION/Dematic, Honeywell, Swisslog, AutoStore and Bastian) together hold about 49% share.
