연혁

CF Industries Holdings, Inc. was founded in 1946 and is headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois. Together with its subsidiaries, it produces ammonia in North America, Europe, and internationally, converting hydrogen from natural gas and nitrogen from the air into anhydrous ammonia via the Haber-Bosch process, then selling or upgrading it into products such as granular urea, urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) solution, and ammonium nitrate. The company completed its IPO on August 11, 2005, and today operates through Ammonia, Granular Urea, UAN, AN, and Other segments with roughly 2,900 employees. Its scale has been reshaped by sustained buybacks and capital investment: diluted share count fell from about 216 million in 2019 to roughly 196 million in 2022, about 180.7 million in 2024, and approximately 154.5 million by the first quarter of 2026, while annual revenue moved through a cyclical path from $4.59 billion in 2019 to a peak of $11.19 billion in 2022 and $5.94 billion in 2024. In January 2026, Christopher D. Bohn, previously Chief Operating Officer, became President and CEO in an internal succession, and from 2025 the Blue Point low-carbon ammonia project entered a significant capital-investment phase.

업계 내 위치

CF Industries is, by its own disclosure, one of the largest ammonia producers in the world and holds high shares across several key North American nitrogen categories: its eight North American manufacturing facilities account for approximately 40%, 41%, 44%, and 19% of North American ammonia, urea, UAN, and ammonium nitrate capacity, respectively. The company serves cooperatives, retailers, independent fertilizer distributors, traders, wholesalers, and industrial users, and also supplies industrial products including diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), nitric acid, urea liquor, and low-carbon ammonia. Its cost and distribution advantages stem from concrete assets rather than brand or switching costs: all of its ammonia plants are located in North America with access to relatively low-cost natural gas, supported by about 40 owned or leased distribution facilities, access to the roughly 2,000-mile Sunoco ammonia pipeline, and proximity to the U.S. Corn Belt. Natural gas accounted for about 34% of total production cost in 2025, and the Donaldsonville complex represented roughly 40% of the company's 2025 ammonia capacity. The company has also disclosed that its long-term asset utilization ran about 10% higher than North American competitors over the prior five years; by contrast, peer Yara has disclosed that roughly 56% of its global ammonia capacity sits in Europe, exposed to higher and more volatile natural gas costs.
