업계 내 위치
Dollar General is a discount retailer operating in the southern, southwestern, midwestern, and eastern United States, running small-format stores across rural, suburban, and urban communities that sell high-frequency, low-ticket everyday necessities including food, cleaning supplies, paper goods, health and beauty items, basic apparel, and seasonal merchandise, with prices generally at $10 or less and a mix of national and private brands. Its footprint of 20,893 stores places its locations within five miles of roughly 75% of the U.S. population, and about 82.0% of FY2025 sales came from consumables. The company identifies its principal direct competitors as Walmart, Family Dollar, and Dollar Tree, while its broader competitive set also includes pharmacies, grocery stores, convenience stores, warehouse membership clubs, and online retailers, and it acknowledges that some competitors are stronger in capital, marketing, distribution, and supplier negotiating power. Its competitive advantages derive from store density and near-site convenience, low-cost operations and a relatively lean SKU structure, scale purchasing, and a distribution network that functions as systematic infrastructure; the DG Media Network and digital tools are incremental rather than core. Brand and switching costs are weak, and the company states that its ability to raise prices when costs rise is limited.
