연혁

The Kroger Co. was founded in 1883 and is based in Cincinnati, Ohio. It became a publicly listed company with an IPO dated January 26, 1928. The company developed into a large, mature U.S. food retailer operating through a single primary reportable segment centered on domestic food retail. As of January 31, 2026, Kroger operated 2,697 supermarkets across 35 states and Washington, D.C., of which 2,250 included pharmacies and 1,731 included fuel centers, and it also owned 33 food production plants. Its store formats include combination food and drug stores, multi-department stores, marketplace stores, and price-impact warehouse stores. Over time the company expanded beyond core grocery retailing into adjacent profit streams: its Our Brands private-label portfolio (including Private Selection, Kroger, Smart Way, and Simple Truth) generated more than 39 billion USD in sales in 2025, while its alternative-profit businesses built on more than 20 years of data science investment, the 84.51° unit, and Kroger Precision Marketing retail-media and data-analytics services contributed 1.5 billion USD in operating profit in 2025. eCommerce sales surpassed 16 billion USD in 2025, up 16% year over year. In leadership, longtime CEO Rodney McMullen resigned in March 2025; Ron Sargent was appointed interim CEO, and in February 2026 the board appointed Greg Foran as CEO.

업계 내 위치

Kroger is one of the most significant food retailers in the United States, with national scale, local banners, multiple store formats, and a substantial private-label capability. It operates in a mature, low-growth, highly competitive grocery industry characterized by low margins and limited pricing power, where demand is steady but the supply side is crowded. Its scale is anchored by 2,697 stores, roughly 63 million households served annually, more than 95% of customer transactions tied to its loyalty program, 2,250 pharmacies, and 1,731 fuel centers, which together support stronger purchasing power, a denser fulfillment network, higher private-label penetration, and more monetizable data assets. Its competitive standing is shaped by multiple rival models rather than a single regional chain: Walmart reported FY2026 total revenue of 713.163 billion USD, materially larger than Kroger; Costco reported FY2025 net sales of 269.912 billion USD with a membership-fee model; and Albertsons reported FY2024 sales of 80.391 billion USD and FY2025 sales of 83.173 billion USD, remaining an important traditional competitor, alongside Aldi. Kroger's differentiation sources include its scale, store network, Our Brands private label, loyalty data, and retail-media business; its switching costs are weak to moderate, arising from pharmacy, fuel rewards, coupons, member pricing, and online-ordering habits. Kroger is large but is not the strongest price setter in its industry, and it has stated plans to lower prices on thousands of items to compete with Walmart, Costco, and Aldi.
