연혁

NiSource Inc. was founded in 1847 and is headquartered in Merrillville, Indiana. It went public on October 19, 1984, and operated under the name NIPSCO Industries, Inc. before changing its name to NiSource Inc. in April 1999. The company is an energy holding company that runs regulated natural gas and electric utilities in the United States through two segments, Columbia Operations and NIPSCO Operations. Its gas business delivers natural gas through approximately 37,300 miles of distribution main pipeline and 310 miles of transmission main pipeline across Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and Maryland, while NIPSCO generates, transmits, and distributes electricity to about 0.5 million customers in northern Indiana, supported by coal stations in Wheatfield and Michigan City, a combined-cycle gas turbine in West Terre Haute, and hydro, wind, and solar units across several Indiana counties. In 2024 the company completed a transaction bringing Blackstone in as a 19.9% minority owner of NIPSCO to fund its capital needs, and by 2026 management had raised its five-year capital plan to approximately $28 billion, with data center and grid investment as new growth drivers; the company employs 7,668 people.

NiSource describes itself as one of the largest fully-regulated utilities in the United States, serving roughly 3.3 million natural gas customers and about 0.5 million electric customers across six states: Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and Kentucky. It operates its gas distribution business under the Columbia brand in multiple states and runs both gas and electric operations under NIPSCO in Indiana. Rather than competing for customers on the same street, NiSource operates within established service territories and earns allowed returns on its regulated asset base; its competitive advantages derive from operating licenses, regulatory authorization, exclusive service areas, and capital-intensive infrastructure that a new entrant cannot easily replicate, along with regulatory mechanisms under which roughly 85% of capital expenditure enters cash recovery within 12 months. Its closest comparable peers in the regulated utility space include Atmos Energy, CenterPoint, WEC Energy, and Duke Energy. NiSource has also expanded into large data center load through partnerships with Amazon and Alphabet via a GenCo structure designed so new large-load build costs do not burden existing retail customers, with disclosed savings to existing customers of approximately $1 billion to $1.25 billion.
