História
CenterPoint Energy, Inc. was founded in 1866 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas, operating as a public utility holding company in the United States. It is organized into three reporting segments: Electric, Natural Gas, and Corporate and Other. In 2025 the company actively reshaped its asset portfolio: in March 2025 it completed the sale of its Louisiana and Mississippi natural gas LDC assets for about $1.2 billion, and in October 2025 it agreed to sell its Ohio natural gas LDC to National Fuel Gas for about $2.62 billion, a transaction valued at roughly 1.9 times that business's 2024 rate base and expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026. Its ten-year capital plan was raised from about $65 billion announced in September 2025 to about $65.5 billion in February 2026. In October 2025 the board appointed Jason Wells as Chairman and created a Lead Independent Director role to balance its governance structure. By the end of 2025 the company generated about $9.357 billion in revenue, served roughly 2.859 million metered electric customers, and employed 8,794 people.
Posição no setor
CenterPoint Energy operates as a regulated electric transmission-and-distribution and natural gas utility. Its Electric segment includes transmission and distribution in the ERCOT region of Texas, where Houston Electric serves essentially the entire Houston/Galveston metropolitan area, plus transmission, distribution, and generation/wholesale operations in southwestern Indiana. As of year-end 2025 Houston Electric served about 2.859 million metered customers through 67 retail electric providers (REPs) and had no other electric transmission-and-distribution utility competing within its service territory; it bills the REPs directly, with the largest balances from NRG- and Vistra-affiliated providers, and the REPs in turn sell to end users. Indiana Electric served about 154,400 metered customers. The Natural Gas segment, following the divestiture of the Louisiana and Mississippi assets, distributes to residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, and Texas, with total company customers reported above 7 million. The company's competitive position rests on regulated infrastructure facts rather than brand or network effects: licenses, rights-of-way, regional franchise scale, sunk capital, and high switching costs for customers tied to a single physical network. Its asset base includes 355 substations with 81,692 megavolt-amperes of transformer capacity and about 208 miles of intrastate pipeline in Louisiana and Texas, and the company has disclosed 12.2 GW of committed industrial load in its service area.
