The company operates through four segments: Electric, Gas, DTE Vantage, and Energy Trading.The company's Electric segment generates, purchases, distributes, and sells electricity to approximately 2.3 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers in southeastern Michigan. It generates electricity through coal-fired plants, natural gas plant, hydroelectric pumped storage, and nuclear plants, as well as wind and solar assets. This segment owns and operates 702 distribution substations with a capacity of approximately 37,870,000 kilovolt-amperes (kVA) and approximately 4,56,900 line transformers with a capacity of approximately 33,770,000 kVA. The company's Gas segment purchases, stores, transports, distributes, and sells natural gas to approximately 1.4 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers throughout Michigan; and sells storage and transportation capacity. This segment has approximately 21,000 miles of distribution mains; 1,242,000 service pipelines; and 1,361,000 active meters, as well as owns approximately 2,000 miles of transmission pipelines. Its DTE Vantage segment offers metallurgical and petroleum coke to steel and other industries; and power generation, steam production, chilled water production, and wastewater treatment services, as well as compressed air supply to industrial customers. This segment also owns and operates 2 renewable generating plants with a capacity of 70 MWs; and 22 gas recovery sites. Its Energy Trading segment engages in power, natural gas, and environmental marketing and trading; structured transactions; and the optimization of contracted natural gas pipeline transportation and storage positions. The regulated Electric segment generates, purchases, distributes, and sells electricity to approximately 2.3 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers in southeastern Michigan, using coal-fired, natural gas, hydroelectric pumped storage, and nuclear plants along with wind and solar assets; it owns and operates 702 distribution substations. The regulated Gas segment serves approximately 1.4 million customers throughout Michigan, with about 21,000 miles of distribution mains and roughly 2,000 miles of transmission pipelines. The non-utility DTE Vantage segment supplies metallurgical and petroleum coke, renewable natural gas, and custom energy services, and owns two renewable generating plants totaling 70 MW and 22 gas recovery sites, while the Energy Trading segment conducts power, natural gas, and environmental marketing and trading. In 2021 the company completed the spin-off of DT Midstream. In 2025, segment net income was approximately $1.158 billion from Electric, $295 million from Gas, $154 million from DTE Vantage, and $123 million from Energy Trading, with a Corporate and Other loss of about $268 million, so the two regulated utilities supplied nearly all earnings. Driven by Michigan's 2023 clean-energy legislation requiring a 100% clean energy standard by 2040, 50% renewables by 2030, and 60% by 2035, the company plans to complete the Belle River coal-to-gas conversion in 2026 and to retire its Monroe coal units in stages in 2028 and 2032, replacing them with renewable, storage, demand-response, and gas resources. Its 2026-2030 capital plan totals roughly $36.5 billion, including about $30 billion for DTE Electric, $4.5 billion for DTE Gas, and $2 billion for DTE Vantage; a 1.0 GW data-center agreement signed in 2026 adds about $5 billion of additional capital spending through 2032.

DTE Energy is a mature, capital-intensive regulated utility whose competitive position rests on franchise rights, regulatory barriers, scale, sunk infrastructure, and natural monopoly within its service territory rather than on brand or network effects. DTE Electric's distribution business in southeastern Michigan is effectively a regional monopoly; Michigan's retail open access policy caps retail choice at 10% of sales, and the company expects such customers to remain around 10% of retail sales, so replicating its transmission and distribution network, generation, dispatch, and regulatory compliance would require many years, large capital, and regulatory approval. The utilities earn through regulated base rates, cost-tracking mechanisms, and surcharges: in its 2025 electric rate case the company sought a $574 million base-rate increase and an ROE rise from 9.9% to 10.75%, and in February 2026 the Michigan Public Service Commission approved a $242 million annualized revenue increase while holding ROE at 9.9%; a further April 2026 case sought a $474 million increase at a 10.25% target ROE. The most comparable same-state listed peer is CMS Energy; on a market snapshot DTE's market capitalization was about $30.2 billion versus CMS at about $29.2 billion, with DTE's trailing PE around 23.9x against CMS at about 20.5x and Xcel at about 23.3x, indicating DTE does not trade at a clear discount to quality peers. Its compensation peer group includes CMS Energy, WEC Energy, and Xcel Energy. Switching costs are high because residential and commercial end users cannot easily leave the electric grid or gas network, and the company holds about $7.598 billion of regulatory assets, underscoring its dependence on the regulatory framework that defines its position.
