Illumina, Inc. provides sequencing- and array-based solutions for genetic and genomic analysis in the Americas, Europe, Greater China, the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa. The company offers sequencing- and array-based instruments and consumables, which include reagents, flow cells, and library preparation; whole-genome sequencing kits, which sequence entire genomes of various size and complexity; and targeted resequencing kits, which sequence exomes, specific genes, and RNA or other genomic regions of interest. It also provides whole-genome sequencing, genotyping, noninvasive prenatal testing, and product support services. The company serves genomic research centers, academic institutions, government laboratories, and hospitals, as well as pharmaceutical, biotechnology, commercial molecular diagnostic laboratories, and consumer genomics companies. The company markets and distributes its products directly to customers, as well as through life-science distributors. The company has a collaboration with Labcorp Holdings Inc. for the development of oncology treatments through applications of sequencing solutions across the healthcare ecosystem; and strategic collaboration with Integrated DNA Technologies to enable a DRAGEN, secondary analysis pipeline for IDT xGena, FFPE and cfDNA next generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation with custom panels, delivering an integrated, end-to-end solution for somatic oncology research. It also has a data partnership with Center for Data-Driven Discovery in Biomedicine to advance research in pediatric cancer and rare disease. Illumina, Inc. was incorporated in 1998 and is headquartered in San Diego, California.
História
Illumina, Inc. was incorporated in 1998 and is headquartered in San Diego, California, conducting its NASDAQ IPO in 2000; its early business was BeadArray genotyping and SNP arrays rather than sequencing. The 2007 acquisition of Solexa for about $600 million brought the proprietary sequencing-by-synthesis (SBS) chemistry that became the foundation of its sequencing platform, and successive flagship instruments pushed the cost of a human genome down a ladder: Genome Analyzer (2007), HiSeq (2010, about a $10,000 genome), HiSeq X (2014, the first sub-$1000 genome), NovaSeq (2017), and NovaSeq X (2023, a $200 genome). A central event was GRAIL, the multi-cancer early-detection company Illumina incubated and spun out in 2016 while retaining a minority stake: in September 2020 Illumina announced an approximately $8 billion reacquisition and closed it in August 2021 (about $7.1 billion in value at close) without FTC or EU clearance, drawing a €432 million EU fine in July 2023 and an FTC divestiture order; the spin-off was completed on 2024-06-24 (one GRAIL share per six Illumina shares, about 85.5% distributed), and in September 2024 the Court of Justice of the European Union overturned the EU's jurisdiction and voided the €432 million fine. The episode produced cumulative goodwill and intangible impairments of about $6.6 billion (FY2022 $3.91 billion, FY2023 $827 million, FY2024 $1.889 billion). CEO Francis deSouza resigned in June 2023 and Jacob Thaysen became CEO in September 2023; under him Illumina acquired Fluent Biosciences (single-cell) in January 2024 and SomaLogic (proteomics) for about $460 million in January 2026, extending the platform toward multiomics.
Posição no setor
Illumina is the global leader in next-generation sequencing (NGS), accounting for over 80% of sequencing data output and over 90% of clinical genomic testing. Its model is razor-razorblade: it sells sequencing instruments and the proprietary flow cells and reagents that run only on those instruments, generating recurring, high-margin consumable revenue from a base of more than 23,000 installed sequencers worldwide (2023 disclosure). In FY2025 sequencing consumables alone were $2,939M, 67.7% of revenue, recurring revenue (consumables plus services) was about 89%, and non-GAAP gross margin was about 68%; by region FY2025 revenue was Americas 55.4%, Europe 29.1%, Greater China 5.6%, and Asia Pacific/Middle East/Africa 9.9%. The competitive position rests on installed-base lock-in to dedicated consumables, very high switching costs in clinical use once an assay is validated on the Illumina platform under FDA/IVDR, and a software ecosystem spanning DRAGEN analysis and the BaseSpace/ICA cloud. Its core SBS chemistry patents largely expired between 2022 and 2024; in 2022 a Delaware jury found Illumina infringed two Complete Genomics (BGI) two-color patents (about $334 million in damages), and in July 2022 Illumina paid BGI about $325 million to settle the US litigation and took a US license for the two-color sequencing chemistry. Competitors named in the source include BGI/MGI (DNBSEQ), Ultima ($1/Gb, $100 genome), Element (VITARI, $100 genome), and Roche's SBX/Axelios platform ($150 genome, due in the summer of 2026); valuation peers in life-science tools include Thermo Fisher, Danaher, Agilent, Waters, 10x Genomics, Oxford Nanopore, PacBio, and MGI.
