История

Packaging Corporation of America was founded in 1867 and is headquartered in Lake Forest, Illinois. It became a publicly listed company with an IPO on January 27, 2000, and today employs approximately 16,800 people. The business is organized into a Packaging segment and a Paper segment (with a Corporate and Other segment also reported), and has grown into a company centered on corrugated packaging and containerboard with a smaller uncoated freesheet paper operation. By 2025 consolidated net sales reached about $8.989 billion, of which the Packaging segment contributed about $8.294 billion in external sales, the Paper segment about $615 million, and Corporate and Other about $80 million. In September 2025 the company completed the acquisition of Greif's containerboard business for cash consideration of approximately $1.8 billion, adding 2 containerboard mills, roughly 800,000 tons of capacity, and 8 sheet feeder/corrugated plants.

Положение в отрасли

In its 2025 annual report Packaging Corporation of America describes itself as the third-largest producer of containerboard and corrugated packaging in North America, with Packaging accounting for the large majority of revenue. Its competitive position rests on an integrated containerboard supply, internal fiber and system coordination, and a national plant network, with fiber identified as the largest raw material cost and most mills able to switch among different fiber sources. The corrugated plants are typically located close to customers, each serving a radius of roughly 150 miles, so transportation cost and delivery capability form part of the competitive dynamic. Customer concentration differs by segment: no single Packaging customer accounts for 10% or more of total sales, while the top three Paper customers represent about 46% of that segment's sales. Public peers cited for comparison include International Paper, Smurfit WestRock, Graphic Packaging, and Sonoco, though regional independent mills, transportation radius, and local service also determine where orders go.
