Steel Dynamics, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, operates as a steel producer and metal recycler in the United States. It operates through four segments: Steel Operations, Metals Recycling Operations, Steel Fabrication Operations, and Aluminum Operations. The Steel Operations segment offers hot rolled, cold rolled, and coated steel products; parallel flange beams and channel sections, large unequal leg angles, and reinforcing steel bars, standard strength carbon, intermediate alloy hardness, and premium grade rail products; engineered special-bar-quality products, merchant-bar-quality products, and other engineered round steel bars; channels, angles, flats, merchant rounds, and reinforcing steel bars; and specialty shapes and light structural steel products. This segment also engages in turning, polishing, straightening, chamfering, precision saw-cutting, and heat treating of bar products. Its products are used in construction, automotive, manufacturing, transportation, heavy and agricultural equipment, energy, and pipe and tube markets. The Metals Recycling Operations segment is involved in the ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal processing, transportation, marketing, brokerage, and scrap management services. Its ferrous products include heavy melting steel, busheling, bundled scrap, shredded scrap, steel turnings, and cast-iron products; and nonferrous products comprise aluminum, brass, copper, stainless steel, and other nonferrous metals. The Steel Fabrication Operations segment produces steel non-residential building components, such as steel joists, joist girders, and steel deck products for non-residential steel fabricators, metal building companies, general construction contractors, developers, property owners, brokers, and governmental entities. The Aluminum Operations segment offers recycled aluminum flat rolled products. The company also exports its products. Steel Dynamics, Inc. was incorporated in 1993 and is headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
История
Steel Dynamics, Inc. was incorporated in 1993 and is headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana; it completed its IPO on November 21, 1996. The company has grown into a producer of steel and a metal recycler operating across the United States and Mexico, and by 2025 defined itself as a leading industrial metals solutions company spanning four reporting segments: Steel Operations, Metals Recycling Operations, Steel Fabrication Operations, and Aluminum Operations. In 2025 Steel Operations accounted for roughly 72% of consolidated net sales, Metals Recycling about 11%, Steel Fabrication about 8%, and the Aluminum business about 2%, with aluminum being the most recent addition as its recycled flat-rolled aluminum operations ramped up. The buildout of this multi-platform system required years of construction and multi-billion-dollar capital investment, with capital expenditures of approximately 1.658 billion, 1.868 billion, and 948 million USD in 2023, 2024, and 2025 respectively. Alongside expansion, the company reduced its weighted-average share count from about 205.1 million in 2021 to about 147.8 million in 2025 through sustained buybacks. Co-founder Mark D. Millett has served as CEO since 2012.
Положение в отрасли
Steel Dynamics describes itself as one of the largest steel producers and metal recyclers in the United States, and from a public-market perspective it sits in or near the top tier of high-quality participants in the U.S. steel and metals value chain. Its market capitalization of about 36.4 billion USD is below Nucor's roughly 55.1 billion USD but above Commercial Metals' about 8.25 billion USD and Reliance's about 19.6 billion USD, placing it among the leading firms without being the sole dominant player. The company's mills run entirely on EAF (electric arc furnace) technology, a structurally lower-cost, lower-carbon route that accounts for over 70% of U.S. steel production according to the Steel Manufacturers Association; in 2024 scrap and self-produced iron made up 82% of its furnace charge. Its OmniSource recycling network supplied 65% of its ferrous scrap to the company's own steel mills in 2025, and mill utilization rose from 81% in 2024 to 86% in 2025 as capacity such as Sinton ramped up, giving it a degree of raw-material and supply security beyond a typical mill dependent on external inputs. Beyond steelmaking, the company operates a downstream steel fabrication platform serving the non-residential construction market and holds processing and distribution capabilities including The Techs and Heartland, with its products also exported.
