Geschichte
Consolidated Edison, Inc. was founded in 1823 and is based in New York, New York, and its IPO date is recorded as January 2, 1970. Through its subsidiaries it operates regulated electric, gas, and steam delivery businesses organized into three segments: CECONY, Orange & Rockland (O&R), and Con Edison Transmission. CECONY, the main entity, delivers electricity and gas in New York City and Westchester and steam in Manhattan, serving approximately 3.7 million electric customers, approximately 1.1 million gas customers, and approximately 1,490 steam customers, and it operates one of the largest steam distribution systems in the United States; O&R serves about 0.3 million electric customers and more than 0.1 million gas customers in southeastern New York and northern New Jersey, while Con Edison Transmission invests in FERC-regulated transmission assets. In 2023 the company completed the sale of its Clean Energy Businesses, which reduces the comparability of that year's results. By scale, the company employs 15,407 people, and as of the first quarter of 2026 reported total shareholders' equity of about 25.596 billion U.S. dollars; it has raised its dividend for 52 consecutive years, with the 2026 quarterly dividend increased to 0.8875 U.S. dollars (3.55 U.S. dollars annualized).
Branchenposition
Consolidated Edison operates regulated electric, gas, and steam delivery networks across the New York metropolitan area, where its grid, gas, and steam systems function as a natural monopoly within its franchise territory. Its position rests on facts rather than brand: non-replicable franchise rights and physical networks, regulatory licenses and rate approvals, high customer switching costs because end customers cannot readily change delivery networks, and reliability the company reports in its annual report as roughly nine times the New York State and national average, serving core New York schools, transit, and hospital systems. Under its latest New York rate plan covering 2026-2028, CECONY operates with a 9.40% ROE and a 48% equity ratio, with electric average rate base of about 32.935 billion, 35.149 billion, and 39.174 billion U.S. dollars and gas average rate base of about 11.485 billion, 12.050 billion, and 12.615 billion U.S. dollars across the three years. The U.S. regulated utility sector is mature rather than high-growth, and the New York region is not a high-population-growth Sunbelt area, so CECONY projects average annual electric peak demand growth of about 0.7% and gas peak demand growth of about 0.2% over five years while steam peak demand declines about 0.9%, with O&R electric peak demand projected to grow about 4.1% annually driven by commercial customers including data centers and EV loads. Rather than market-share contests, the principal competitive dynamics are regulatory negotiation, capital access, engineering execution, and reliability; comparable utility peers named include Exelon, Public Service Enterprise Group, Duke Energy, Xcel Energy, and AEP.
