Mary Barra has served as CEO since 2014 and additionally as chairman since 2016. The company has been highly active in share repurchases: in 2023 it signed a $10 billion ASR and immediately repurchased and retired 215 million shares, retiring a further 29 million shares in 2024; in 2025 the board raised the buyback authorization by $6 billion and executed a $2 billion ASR. More recently, GM merged its Cruise technology team into its GM technology team, shifting from a capital-heavy robotaxi route toward personal-vehicle ADAS.
