Geschichte

The Hershey Company was founded in 1894 and is based in Hershey, Pennsylvania, with its IPO dated 1985-07-01. It has grown into a global confectionery business that defines itself as a global confectionery leader, operating roughly 85+ brands across chocolate, non-chocolate confectionery, mint, gum and other snacks, and selling into approximately 65 countries. The company is organized into three segments: North America Confectionery, North America Salty Snacks, and International, with the salty snacks footprint built through acquisitions such as Dot's and Pretzels. In 2025 it acquired LesserEvil for about $769 million in cash plus up to $200 million in contingent consideration, reinforcing healthier salty snacks and manufacturing capability, and in 2024 its board approved the AAA Initiative targeting long-term savings via manufacturing, supply chain, automation and expense optimization. Annual revenue rose from about $8.971 billion in 2021 to about $11.693 billion in 2025. In July 2025 the board appointed Kirk Tanner as President and CEO effective August 2025, succeeding Michele Buck, who retired.

Branchenposition

Hershey describes itself as the largest producer of quality chocolate in North America and a global confectionery leader, with 2025 total revenue of about $11.693 billion; by segment, North America Confectionery is roughly 81% of revenue, North America Salty Snacks about 11%, and International about 8%. It operates in a mature U.S. candy market where 2025 retail candy sales reached about $55 billion, 99.8% of households purchased candy at least once, and the four major holidays accounted for 63% of annual candy sales; chocolate represented 51.7% of U.S. candy in 2025 while non-chocolate rose from roughly one third in 2015 to 40.9%. Its competitive position rests on brand strength (about $612 million of advertising in 2025), deep North American channel coverage including reliance on McLane for roughly 27% of consolidated net sales, and scale procurement managed through a Swiss trading company handling cocoa sourcing and price risk, alongside strong holiday and seasonal occasion mindshare. Demonstrated pricing power includes about 3% price realization within 0.3% total revenue growth in 2024 and roughly 12% price realization with a volume decline of about 4% in North America Confectionery in Q1 2026. Mondelez is cited as the most comparable large public peer, while Hershey Trust holds about 79.0% of combined voting power.
