Geschichte

PPG Industries, Inc. was incorporated in 1883 and is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; its shares carry an IPO date of April 6, 1983. The company has grown into a global paints, coatings, and specialty-materials manufacturer organized into three reporting segments: Global Architectural Coatings, Performance Coatings, and Industrial Coatings. It has completed more than 50 acquisitions over the past decade-plus, while more recently reshaping its portfolio: in 2024 it sold its U.S. and Canada architectural coatings business for $550 million, a unit that accounted for roughly $2 billion of 2023 sales but carried only a low-single-digit EBITDA margin, with its strongest North American company-owned retail network divested to AIP. The company has paid annual dividends since 1899 and, in 2025, raised its annual per-share dividend for the 54th consecutive year. Tim Knavish has served as chairman and CEO since 2023, having previously held internal roles spanning automotive coatings, industrial coatings, EMEA architectural coatings, and COO. By 2025 the business employed about 43,500 people and recorded sales of $15.875 billion across more than 50 countries.

Branchenposition

PPG is one of the world's leading coatings producers; in PCI's 2025 global top-ten ranking it placed second, behind Sherwin-Williams at number one. Its 2025 sales of $15.875 billion split across three segments: Global Architectural Coatings ($3.838 billion), Performance Coatings ($5.513 billion), and Industrial Coatings ($6.524 billion), serving end markets that include building maintenance, consumer retail, automotive OEM, automotive refinish, aerospace, marine, packaging, and industrial manufacturing; service revenue is under 5% of the total, underscoring a product-centric model. The business is geographically diversified, with about 70% of 2025 sales recognized outside the United States (U.S. 32%, Mexico 11%, China 10%). PPG identifies its key competitive factors as product performance, technology, quality, customer service, price, customer productivity, distribution, and brand identification, and its annual report lists principal competitors including AkzoNobel, Nippon, Jotun, RPM, Axalta, BASF, and Sherwin-Williams. Differentiation is strongest in certification- and technical-service-driven niches such as aerospace coatings, sealants, and transparencies, where it held about $315 million of order backlog at the end of 2025, and in refinish, where digital tools such as PPG LINQ and Moonwalk support customer productivity. Industry consolidation is ongoing, with Axalta and AkzoNobel having signed a merger agreement expected to close in late 2026 to early 2027.
