History

MediaTek Inc. was incorporated in 1997, spun off as an independent company from the multimedia group of United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) by a team led by Cai Mingjie, and is headquartered in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, where it is listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE: 2454). It began in the feature-phone market with turnkey solutions, then moved its Dimensity flagship series into high-end smartphones. It has since expanded into smart edge products (Wi-Fi chips, smart-TV SoCs, Chromebook platforms) and an emerging AI ASIC business co-designed with NVIDIA (GB10, NVLink Fusion).

Industry position

MediaTek is the world's second-largest fabless chip-design company, behind Qualcomm, and ranks among the global top-ten semiconductor firms by 2025 revenue, with FY2025 revenue of NT$596.0 billion (+12.3%). Its mobile chips, the Dimensity and Helio series, hold the leading share in the global Android camp, with smartphone-chip shipment share around 40-45% in Q3 2025. As one of TSMC's largest non-US customers on the N3 and N2 nodes, it has strong process priority and scale, though its core CPU IP relies on Arm. Competitors include Ziguang Zhanrui, Haisi and Samsung Exynos.
