History

Autodesk, Inc. was incorporated in 1982 and is headquartered in San Francisco, California, with its IPO on July 1, 1985. The company began with professional CAD and design tools such as AutoCAD and over time broadened into multiple professional product families spanning architecture, engineering, construction and operations (AECO), product design and manufacturing, and media and entertainment. A defining shift has been the move toward a subscription model: by FY2026 recurring revenue reached 97% of total revenue ($7.024 billion of $7.206 billion), with subscription and maintenance revenue of $6.776 billion, reflecting a transition away from one-time license sales toward continuing renewals. Its go-to-market structure has also changed, with reliance on distributor TD Synnex falling from 39% of revenue in FY2024 to 33% in FY2025 and 14% in FY2026, while direct sales rose from 42% in FY2025 to 63% in FY2026. In recent years the company has shifted resources toward cloud, platform and AI, including a FY2026 restructuring that reallocated resources toward these areas. By FY2026 Autodesk had grown to $7.206 billion in revenue and approximately 14,300 employees.

Industry position

Autodesk is a global supplier of 3D design, engineering and entertainment technology solutions, serving professional organizations across architecture, engineering, construction and operations, product design and manufacturing, and media and entertainment. In FY2026 its revenue by product family was AECO at $3.583 billion, AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT at $1.787 billion, Manufacturing at $1.379 billion, and Media and Entertainment at $332 million; by product type, Design revenue was $5.980 billion, Make $796 million, and Other $430 million. Its competitive standing rests on factual sources of differentiation: high customer switching costs (changing core design workflow tools entails retraining, file compatibility, process redesign and collaboration rebuilding), scale in research and development ($1.643 billion in FY2026) and sales across multiple professional ecosystems, recurring revenue of 97%, net revenue retention above the 100%-110% range, and remaining performance obligations of $8.3 billion. Key competitors include PTC and Dassault Systèmes in manufacturing and product design, Bentley in infrastructure and engineering software, with Adobe cited as a comparable subscription-software business. Autodesk holds a strong position in architecture, design and cross-workflow integration, but is not a monopolist without competitors.
