Carvana Co. was founded in 2012 and is based in Tempe, Arizona, and held its IPO on April 28, 2017. In 2022 it acquired the ADESA U.S. auction business for about USD 2.2 billion, gaining 56 locations, and recognized an USD 847 million goodwill impairment that year. In 2023 the company exchanged USD 5.5 billion of unsecured notes for USD 4.2 billion of secured notes plus USD 341 million in cash, and raised its 2017 incentive plan authorized shares from 16.1207 million to 36.1207 million. In May 2026 Carvana completed a 5-for-1 forward stock split.

Carvana operates an e-commerce platform for buying and selling used cars and is described as the largest online used-car retailer in the United States; it also runs auction sites and employs about 23,100 people. In 2025 total revenue reached USD 20.322 billion, comprising USD 14.537 billion retail vehicle revenue, USD 4.052 billion wholesale, and USD 1.733 billion other. Citing Cox Automotive in its 2025 10-K, U.S. used-car retail transactions exceeded 37 million in 2024, with Carvana's market share at roughly 1.6%; by end of 2025 its wholesale platform volume exceeded 1,006,600 units. A key competitor is CarMax, which reported 255+ stores and about 780,000 used and 540,000 wholesale vehicles sold in fiscal 2026.
