History

Workday, Inc. was incorporated in 2005. It was formerly known as North Tahoe Power Tools, Inc. and changed its name to Workday, Inc. in July 2005, and is headquartered in Pleasanton, California. The company went public on October 12, 2012, and was co-founded by Aneel Bhusri and David Duffield. It has built a suite of cloud, AI-driven enterprise applications spanning Human Capital Management (HCM), Financial Management, Spend Management, and Planning, alongside Workday Extend for building custom applications. By FY2026 the company reported more than 11,500 customers, over 80 million contracted users, and operations across 175+ countries, with annual transaction volume of roughly 1.4 trillion. FY2026 total revenue reached $9.552 billion, of which $8.833 billion (about 92%) came from subscription services and $719 million from professional services; subscription backlog (remaining performance obligations) stood at $28.101 billion. The company has continued to expand through acquisitions, including Paradox and Sana in FY2026. In February 2026, co-founder Aneel Bhusri returned as CEO while continuing to serve as Chairman.

Industry position

Workday is a leading global provider of cloud HCM and is also strong in cloud financial management and ERP-style services for enterprises, serving emerging, mid-size, and large organizations across financial services, government, higher education, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, professional services, retail, and technology and media. Per an IDC summary of the 2024 global HCM applications market, the market grew 14.8% to $41 billion, with Workday ranking first at $5.2 billion in revenue and 12.6% market share. The company serves more than 65% of the Fortune 500 and more than 70% of the Fortune 50. Its principal competitive environment includes Oracle and SAP, which it names as its main competitors in financial management and HCM and which hold established customer relationships and channels, along with ADP, Dayforce, Microsoft, NetSuite, ServiceNow, and UKG. Workday's differentiation rests on high switching costs once HCM, financial, budgeting, contract, recruiting, audit, and payroll processes are embedded in enterprise workflows: FY2026 subscription contracts typically run three years or more and are generally non-cancelable, gross revenue retention was about 97%, and roughly 60% of FY2026 subscription growth came from existing-customer expansion. Scale across 11,500+ customers, 80 million+ users, 175+ countries, and a partner ecosystem reinforces localization, compliance, and customer-reference barriers. For infrastructure, the company relies on third-party cloud providers including AWS and Google Cloud.
